If you enjoy casual hikes through woodlands, the Massachusetts Audubon Society's Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary is a delightful spot. 12 miles of well-maintained paths wind through nearly 2000 acres featuring a variety of natural habitat including forest, meadow, wetland, drumlin, and esker.
Loved this place. The staff was very helpful. The trails were beaitiful with nice boardwalks, lookout tower, and cavern and boulders to walk through. Added plus: bring bird feed for the birds to eat right out of your hand!
Awesome place to take young kids. If you hold out your hand with bird seed you can get birds to land on your hand and eat out of it. You will often see turtles, ducks, and fish in the pond. The rockery is worth checking out.
The first was toward the end of April when it was still chilly out. The trees we're starting to bloom, the birds haven't settled in yet, and there were a few closed paths due to fallen trees and flooded walk ways.
It was an even better experience the second time around and I'm sure I'll be back for a third.
Needless to say it was tranquil and welcoming as nobody else was around. Though I did venture into the closed paths for an adventure, the scenery was no less gorgeous and awe-inspiring.
Single visit non-member admission is $4 for adults: $3 for seniors & children 2 - 12. Annual memberships are inexpensive & provide free admission and access to canoe rentals, camping on Perkins Island, & Innermost House cabin rental.
One of the most beautiful and pristine places on the north shore of Boston. Amazing wildlife, marshes and great hiking! A must see- plan a day!
The second time I visited was recently. This afforded me a second look at the river's vibrant side to contrast its bleak appearance a few months prior. Birds had made their way back and fluttered their way to and ftp along my hike and I may have spotted a turtle in the water.
We have many nature preserves in Massachusetts, but the Ipswich River sanctuary is one of the crown jewels. In addition to self-guided visits, you can take advantage of the many educational programs for pre-school through senior citizen. If you're based in the area, the summer camp for kids is a great experience combining education, exercise, and plain old-fashion outdoor fun.
One of the first Mass Audubon sites that I've visited and even came back a second time:
